Borrowing in debt securities increased in January

Total Swedish liabilities in debt securities amounted to SEK 8 022 billion at the end of January, up by SEK 346 billion from December. The increase is evenly distributed between bonds and money market instruments.

The bank sector was the largest contributor to the increase in liabilities in debt securities in January. In this sector, the debt stock in money market instruments increased by SEK 83 billion from the previous month and amounted to SEK 513 billion at the end of January. In bonds, borrowing in the bank sector amounted to SEK 1 388 billion, up by SEK 22 billion.

In the housing sector, which accounts for the largest proportion of the total debt stock, liabilities in debt securities amounted to SEK 2 094 billion at the end of January. This is an increase of SEK 69 billion from the previous month. Securities denominated in Swedish kronor accounted for SEK 61 billion of this increase. All debt securities in the housing sector consist of bonds.

Borrowing increased in securities denominated in US dollars

Total liabilities in debt securities denominated in US dollars amounted to SEK 1 230 billion at the end of January, which is an increase of SEK 141 billion compared with December. Net transactions account for SEK 107 billion of this increase, while the remaining increase can be explained by the effect of the exchange rate.

A majority of the increase in borrowing in securities denominated in US dollars is related to money market instruments. In money market instruments, borrowing in securities denominated in US dollars increased by SEK 110 billion, of which SEK 102 billion was due to net transactions.

Maturity structure

Within the next six months, debt securities valued at SEK 1 670 billion will reach their maturity date. Among these securities, money market instruments and bonds account for SEK 1 086 billion and SEK 585 billion respectively.

Securities denominated in foreign currency valued at SEK 795 billion will reach their maturity date within the next six months. Among these securities, securities denominated in US dollars account for SEK 464 billion.
